Challenge 4-Lurk

challenge 4

What is Lurking? *

Lurking is a slang term for when an individual reads the content of a social site without posting or engaging with the community. Lurking is sometimes encouraged by community moderators as a way for new members to get a sense of the community and etiquette before participating. Lurking also may occur if a user simply wants to get some information without adding to the discussion. (Techopedia)

Challenge Overview *

During the next two weeks you will spend time lurking in at least two social media sites. To determine which two sites you will lurk in, take some time to review the social media search contributions your group members have included in your Google Doc.

How to Lurk: *

As you lurk in two social sites over this two-week period, you will:

  • Observe the conversations, connections and actions of those who are generating knowledge about the social issue you chose.
  • Plan time to lurk every day in short increments (10-20 minutes).  Frequency of lurking is important, as you may miss a timely exchange or post.
  • If you have a smartphone, use it!  Lurk during down times (standing in line, during a break between classes, etc.).
  • Take notes of what you observe. You may wish to take screenshots as you lurk to help you backtrack and review your findings or use a voice notes app on your phone to record your observations.
  • Think critically about how the activity and knowledge shared and generated in the two social sites is similar and different.

Blog Posts for Challenge 4: *

You will write one blog post for each of the two weeks of this challenge.

  • Blog Post 1 (Week 8)
    • Introduction: Describe this challenge to your readers (explain what you are doing and why). Describe the issue you are investigating and the two social sites you are lurking in.
    • Description of your process:  What are you doing and how frequently are you lurking? How does it feel to be lurking?
    • Critical reflections: What are you observing in each of the two sites? Describe the volume of active contributions, any observations you’ve noted about etiquette or group norms, discuss aspects of your observations that have surprised you or that you do not understand fully.
  • Blog Post 2 (Week 9)
    • Introduction: Describe this challenge to your readers (explain what you are doing and why). Describe the issue you are investigating and the two social sites you are lurking in.
    • Description of your process:  Explain to your audience how people are engaging with your issue on these two social media sites.
    • Critical reflections: Now that you’ve been lurking for two weeks, how have your observations changed? Critically compare and contrast what you have observed on both sites about your topic. In your analysis, include examples (screenshots, quotes, links, images, videos) that support your ideas.  (Tip! If you are lurking on Twitter, you can copy a Tweet and paste it right into your blog post. Click here to learn how.)
